I think if someone walked by the first meeting with Team First – they would definitely laugh. Two giant former NBA players sitting for lunch with two little blonde girls – discussing the hope for education in New York City. We decided to partner with Team First because they have taken their gifts and talents and are using them to inspire and mentor the youth of our great city.

Team First Inc. is a Brooklyn based non-profit that aims to merge young New York City corporate professionals and inner city children into one place: The Basketball Court. The shared passion between the two social groups creates a sustainable mentorship program that helps inner city children engage in a platform of exchange of information, networks, and education. Having a positive role model to shoot some hoops with is the first step for them to learn that it is possible to manage their athletic passion with academic responsibilities. Additionally, the mentorship initiative also offers an effective solution to tackle healthcare issues that many youth are currently facing, such as childhood obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. At Team First, it’s not just a basketball program, it’s an education in a lifestyle of intelligence and athleticism, not just a sport.
